LEICESTER— An hourlong power failure that occurred 20 minutes before the polls were scheduled to close last night threw a monkey wrench into the tabulating of election results at Town Hall, but the creative and determined election crew came through with flying colors. 

The power failure resulted when a car crashed into a utility pole on Henshaw Street near the intersection with Autumn Lane, causing lights to flicker briefly and then to go out when police ordered the shutdown of a power grid because of the life-threatening situation. 

Officer Thomas P. Moughan said a 2004 Subaru Impreza driven by Jeffrey Marquis, 22, of Charlton went off the road and struck a utility pole. Mr. Marquis was trapped in the vehicle for about 40 minutes before he was removed with an extrication tool. 

"The pole was cracked and there were multiple connections close to the ground, so the only safe thing to do was shut down the entire grid," Officer Moughan said. Because of the shutdown, the entire central section of town was without power for an hour. 

Mr. Marquis, who was alone in the car, was taken by Worcester ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus with "very serious injuries," Officer Moughan said. 

Cause of the accident is under investigation, but Officer Moughan said early indications are excessive speed was involved. 

The outage occurred with roughly a dozen individuals waiting to vote at Town Hall before the 8 p.m. closing of the polls. 

"Everyone got to vote," said Town Clerk Patricia A. Hartnett, "but it was touch and go for a while." 

Town Hall has emergency lighting, but only in certain small areas. Mrs. Hartnett said the workers registering incoming voters found a spot in a corner of the room where they could total up the number of voters they had recorded. 

"When the lights came back on, they checked their totals with the counting machines and a big cheer went up when they found that all their totals matched," Mrs. Hartnett said. 

The emergency lights did not cover the voting booths, so the two police officers on duty - Steven Zecco and Paul S. Doray - held flashlights over the booths to light the ballots while voters marked them, and then escorted the voters to the counting machines. 

"It was hectic in here for a while," said Dale Pitzen, a member of the Board of Registrars, "but the counting machines worked perfectly."

Just wanted to let you guys know to keep this kid in your prayers he was in a bad accident last night. I got in to work last night to find out a 04 silver WRX was involved in a bad accident in Leicester, kids name is Jeffrey Marquis from charleton i believe he was 22, not sure if anyone knows him, but he is in pretty bad condition they still weren't sure of his condition this morning when i got you. Not sure if any of you know him or not but lets keep him in our prayers.



Okay, this is Jeffrey and it's my turn :::

That morning my uncle Andy G. called my house where he ( and my girlfriend Allyson H. ) ordered me to really drink, like get DRUNK at a bar when I hadn't had a single drink for two months... where I was free of alcohol all through October ( but it was extremely difficult ), I stopped at a bar after withdrawing from Calculus I at Worcester State University where I was taking 3 classes. I was so sad after withdrawing from that class, and I was given free drinks that Andy and everyone involved in "the plan" paid the bartenders in advance. They gave me free drinks while KNOWING I WAS DRIVING !!! ( Then, after voting at the voting-place and making way to my car, a Leicester police officer saw me falling down drunk in the parking lot, needing assistance from a man to stand up ) -- GOD I WISH THAT OFFICER OR OFFICER MOUGHAN INTERVENED !!! -- as I got into my Subaru WRX -- I drove a short distance away from the place of voting to a good friend's house in Leicester, Derek Langlois, a best-friend from Saint John's who was a focal-point of "the plan" to have me be stopped, and I discovered he wasn't home when he told me he would be, but then he left his house where I was planning on being there for a while, sobering up -- he left because that was part of the plan -- oh and he was given a new car worth $40k for agreeing to help out in the plan to have me given a DUI, and maybe crash. I drove off, but I saw there was a Leicester cop driving past his driveway as I left and he could have stopped me easily, because he knew about "their plan" my girlfriend and uncle are responsible for -- I could have died. They almost killed me. The police had multiple chances to detain me, but certain people wanted for me to get into a police chase and go to jail !!!

Millions of my brain cells were killed with impact from a telephone pole, and I have a major mental Disability with a faulty left hip that effects my walking and inability to run, because of the jerks who "set up" the evil "plan" for me to get pulled over drunk... They wanted me driving my turbo sportscar drunk when I could have collided with someone on the side of the road, killing them -- yes they took risks and it resulted in my RUINED LIFE !!! =(

I was not arrested.
I haven't had a drink in four years.
I lost my license from 2004-2005, through the court.
I'm a safe driver, but I don't have my car with me now in Vermont at Averte.

This was a "plan" to have me caught driving drunk. A group of several friends and family members -- including my parents who had known some of Andy's plan to ruin me  -- were waiting at the Leicester Police Station to see me put behind bars and help me get sober. I had a grandfather who was a drunk, on my Mom's side of the family, and I have two cousins who are addicted to beer and alcoholic beverages.

My hip was in 7 pieces, and my Traumatic Brain Injury ranked my "abilities" to function as 4/15 Glasgow Coma Scale, which I spent one month intubated with a "feeding tube" because I couldn't swallow on my own, in the ICU at UMass under the head (ouch my injured head!) neuropsychologist Dr. Sheldon Benjamin's care -- then I recovered in Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital in Worcester, for two and a half months with bad double-vision and problems with coordination and memory. I've passed some classes at WSU in English with a Concentration in Writing and gotten an A- in Poetry II and B+ 's in Creative Writing I, Health I, and Psychology I.

I've had a great recovery through Fairlawn and Dr. Thamel with vision-therapy. I'm half an inch shorter on my left leg from where my hip was in seven pieces, and I get a shoe-lift in the heel. I have a Trust-Fund through my parents and a company I did years of work for, since attending Saint John's High School nearby, and my father owned 25% of the company, ECM Plastics, Inc in Worcester that has been sold. It sold for $36.5 million dollars to A. Schulman.

I ran a dot-com website in 2003, before my Traumatic Brain Injury, and now I run www.WRXTBI.com with links to all my online content.

My Marquis-parents, Wayne and Deborah, in Charlton MA, are my Health-Care "Proxy", but they won't let me live with them !!! They moved me hours away in another state (VT), and they refuse to give me my car in my name that I own.

One of the Leicester Police that showed up to the scene had "666" tattooed on his arm. He made a special point to show me it when I saw him in court. How should I feel ???

And who caused my crash, from my point of view ???
